Preparing for WOCS

The Army Fitness Test on arrival and again before you leave. That second one is the one people underestimate.

AFT in, AFT out

Warrant Officer Candidate School at Fort Rucker tests the Army Fitness Test on arrival and again before you leave. That framing matters: it is not a gate you clear once and forget. Candidates who arrive at the minimum and then lose ground during a course with daily PT and weekly marches find the exit test is the harder of the two.

Physical fitness is routinely named as one of the three things that delays candidates most. It is also the most straightforwardly fixable before you arrive.

It marches weekly

WOCS foot-marches every week, building toward 10 kilometres. Six and a bit miles is not a Ranger School distance, but weekly, cumulatively, on top of daily PT, it finds people who have never carried weight.

The AFT is required for entry and exit. The march row is readiness for the weekly marches, not a published cutoff.
Build the march before you go

Ten kilometres is a little over six miles. If your longest loaded walk is two miles, the first week will hurt and the fourth will hurt more. Six weeks of one weekly ruck, building a mile at a time, removes the problem entirely.

The rest of it

WOCS is heavily a standards-and-attention course: uniform, room, timelines, memorization, and leadership evaluation under time pressure. None of that is trainable in a gym, and all of it is trainable at home — being the candidate who already knows the material and can hold a timeline buys a quieter six weeks.

Pass the exit test, not just the entry one

Lensatic’s AFT plan trains all five events specifically, and Road to 12 Miles builds foot-march distance well past 10 km so the weekly marches are routine. Rucks track by GPS with per-mile splits, and the standards board shows your AFT numbers as they come in.
