Preparing for Marine Boot Camp
Thirteen weeks, ending in 54 hours on foot. The entry test is three pull-ups; the thing you are actually preparing for is nothing like it.
The Initial Strength Test
The IST is taken at the recruiting office before you ship and again on arrival. It is a screen, not a target — clearing it is what gets you on the bus, and it is nowhere near what recruit training asks of you.
| Event | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Pull-ups | 3 | 1 |
| Push-ups (alternative) | 34 | 15 |
| Plank | 40 sec | 40 sec |
| 1.5-mile run | 13:30 | 15:00 |
Three pull-ups and a 13:30 mile-and-a-half is a low bar and the gap between it and a passing PFT is enormous. Score the PFT you will take in training — pull-ups, plank and a three-mile run — and train for that instead.
Thirteen weeks and the Crucible
Marine recruit training is the longest of the four services at around thirteen weeks, at Parris Island or San Diego. It ends in the Crucible: 54 hours on foot with restricted food and sleep, finishing with the Reaper and the eagle, globe and anchor.
Nothing in the other three services' basic training is equivalent. That single fact should shape your preparation: what the Crucible asks for is the ability to keep going on your feet, carrying things, tired and hungry — not a fast two-mile.
Long walks, hikes, loaded carries, anything that accumulates hours standing and moving. A recruit who has done several four-hour walks with a pack arrives with something a recruit who only ran intervals does not have.
What to arrive with
- Pull-ups above all. They are the highest-value single exercise in the Marine Corps and you will be measured on them for your whole career. If you have none, negatives and band work three times a week for three months will get you there.
- The three-mile run, not the mile and a half. That is the PFT distance.
- Plank volume, accumulated across the week rather than one maximal hold.
- Swim comfort. There is a water requirement, and being uneasy in deep water is far cheaper to fix at a local pool beforehand.
- Memorization. Eleven general orders, rank structure, the Marines’ Hymn. Free, and being ahead buys you quiet.
A plan that assumes no athletic base
Lensatic’s Marine recruit training plan is built on what the Corps actually gates on — the IST, the conditioning hikes, swim qualification and the PFT you take in training. Weeks 1–3 are a walk/run on-ramp and every calisthenic carries a regression, so it works from a standing start. The Learn tab has a Marine Corps basic training school, separate from the other three services because the courses genuinely do not share a curriculum.

How long is Marine boot camp?
About thirteen weeks, the longest basic training of the four services.
What is the IST minimum?
For men: 3 pull-ups (or 34 push-ups), a 40-second plank and 1.5 miles in 13:30. For women: 1 pull-up (or 15 push-ups), the same plank and 15:00.
What is the Crucible?
A 54-hour culminating event on restricted food and sleep, ending with the Reaper hike and the eagle, globe and anchor ceremony.
Pull-ups or push-ups?
Learn pull-ups. The push-up option exists but caps your PFT score at 70 points for that event for the rest of your career.
