Preparing for AFSPECWAR
Pararescue, Combat Control and Special Reconnaissance all come through the same front door. Most candidates arrive as runners, and the 500-metre swim is what sorts them.
The Initial Fitness Test
Pararescue, Combat Control, Special Reconnaissance and TACP all come through Air Force Special Warfare, and the IFT is the entry screen.
| Event | Minimum | Competitive | Strong |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5-mile run | 10:20 | 9:30 | 8:50 |
| 500-metre surface swim | 12:30 | 10:30 | 9:30 |
| Pull-ups | 8 | 12 | 18 |
| Push-ups | 40 | 60 | 80 |
| Sit-ups | 50 | 65 | 80 |
Underwater and breath-hold work is a genuine part of this pipeline and it kills people who train it alone. Shallow water blackout gives no warning — you do not feel yourself about to pass out, and unconscious in a pool with nobody watching is fatal in minutes. Train underwater skills only with qualified supervision and active rescue coverage. Never alone, never with a friend on a phone, never "just one more". This is the one piece of advice on this page that is not about performance.
The swim is the differentiator
Most candidates arrive as runners. The 500 metres is where preparation shows, and it responds to technique far faster than to effort — the same story as BUD/S. Time spent with a coach who can look at your stroke is worth more than the same hours spent swimming hard with a bad one.
After technique, build aerobic swim volume and comfort in water while wearing things. Comfort is a trainable state and panic is a trained-out one.
The shape of a year
- Months 1–4: swim technique three times a week, easy running volume, calisthenics as accumulated daily volume rather than weekly max sets.
- Months 5–8: swim intervals off a 500 time trial, run intervals alongside the easy base, and start running the IFT events in order with the real rests.
- Months 9–12: add load carriage and rucking, keep the swim, and take full IFTs every three or four weeks.
Add real strength work throughout. The pipeline beyond the IFT involves carrying heavy things for a long time, and endurance athletes with no structural strength are the ones who get hurt in it.
The pool and the pavement, in one place
Lensatic’s eight-week swim programme paces off a 500-yard time trial and separates technique, threshold, speed and long aerobic work. Open Water takes it outside — sighting, breathing both sides, treading, cold built up gradually. Runs track by GPS with splits and heart-rate zones, and the AFSPECWAR plan runs the whole screen.

What is the AFSPECWAR IFT minimum?
As published: 1.5 miles in 10:20, a 500-metre swim in 12:30, 8 pull-ups, 40 push-ups and 50 sit-ups.
Which careers come through it?
Pararescue, Combat Control, Special Reconnaissance and TACP, among others.
Should I practise breath-holding?
Not alone, ever. Shallow water blackout gives no warning and is fatal without immediate rescue. Underwater work belongs in supervised sessions with rescue coverage, full stop.
Is the swim or the run more important?
The swim, for most candidates — it is where technique creates the biggest gap and where most arrivals are weakest.
Is this official?
No. Preparation guidance published by Deadlift Digital LLC, not affiliated with or endorsed by the Air Force or the Department of Defense.
