Preparing for TACP

The load is heavier than most Army selections ask for, and dry means before water goes in.

Note the load. Fifty pounds dry, plus a weapon — heavier than most of the Army selections on this site, and dry means before water. Train at the real weight or the twelve miles will be a surprise.

What the job is

Tactical Air Control Party attach to ground units and control aircraft in support of them. The distinguishing demand is that you carry a lot of radio and battery weight alongside everything else, over distance, and then have to be precise on a radio while out of breath — which is a combination no gym session replicates.

Heavy rucking is the differentiator

Of everything on the standards table, the 50-pound road march is the one that separates prepared candidates from hopeful ones. Build it the slow way — distance first at a moderate load, then the load, then the pace — because heavy rucking is also the fastest route to a stress fracture if you rush it. The progression is here.

Training emphasis

Fifty pounds, twelve miles, built properly

Lensatic’s TACP plan pairs the run standards with a heavy-ruck progression that adds one variable at a time, tracked by GPS with per-mile splits, elevation and the Pandolf load-carriage cost of what you actually carried. Pick Special Tactics TACP and the standards board follows.
