Three events, scored against the current Marine Corps tables, with your class and what the next rung costs. Switch between pull-ups and push-ups to see what the cap is really worth.

The three events
Three events, 100 points each, 300 possible. A 150 total passes, and no event may score zero.
| Event | What it is | Max |
|---|---|---|
| Pull-ups or push-ups | Dead-hang pull-ups, or max push-ups in two minutes. | 100 / 70 |
| Plank | Hold to failure. One scale for every Marine, regardless of age or sex. | 100 |
| Three-mile run | Three miles for time. | 100 |
Choosing push-ups instead of pull-ups caps that event at 70 points. A perfect push-up score is worth 30 points less than a perfect pull-up score, and the cap applies no matter how many you do. Switch the event in the calculator above and watch the ceiling move — for most Marines chasing a 1st Class, learning to do pull-ups is the single highest-value training decision available.
Classes
| Class | Total |
|---|---|
| 1st Class | 235–300 |
| 2nd Class | 200–234 |
| 3rd Class | 150–199 |
The plank is the equalizer
It is the only event on either Marine test scored on a single scale for everyone — same seconds, same points, whatever your age or sex. That makes it the most straightforwardly trainable points on the PFT, and the one most often left alone because it is unpleasant rather than hard.
The usual mistake is training it as one long hold to failure once a week. Accumulated time under tension works better: several holds at 60–70% of your max, several times a week, with the long test hold used sparingly.
Train the events, not just the test
Lensatic carries a USMC PFT plan built around the three events, tracks the run by GPS with splits and heart-rate zones, and logs plank holds and pull-up sets individually so the progression is visible. Pick Marine Corps in the app and the standards board, goals and recommended plans follow.

What is a passing PFT score?
150 points total, with no event scoring zero. That is 3rd Class; 1st Class starts at 235.
Are push-ups or pull-ups better?
Pull-ups, if you can do a reasonable number. Push-ups are capped at 70 points no matter how many you perform, so any Marine scoring above roughly 70 points worth of pull-ups is better off with pull-ups.
Is the plank scored by age?
No. The plank uses one scale for every Marine, which is unusual on a service fitness test and worth knowing before you compare scores with someone twenty years older.
What happened to crunches?
The plank replaced the crunch as the abdominal event. The calculator scores the plank.
Is this official?
No. It is scored from the tables in MCO 6100.13A with Administrative Change 5, dated 28 May 2025. Lensatic is a product of Deadlift Digital LLC and is not affiliated with the Marine Corps or the Department of Defense.
