Preparing for Air Force BMT
Seven and a half weeks, PT six days a week, and a culminating event that grades how you think rather than how long you can suffer.
The fitness assessment
Air Force and Space Force basic training at Lackland runs around seven and a half weeks, with PT six days a week. The assessment has four components and the under-25 minimums are these:
| Component | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Two-mile run | 19:45 | 25:23 |
| Push-ups | 30 | 15 |
| Sit-ups | 33 | 29 |
| Plank | 1:35 | 1:30 |
BMT trains six days a week. Arriving conditioned means those sessions build on something; arriving unconditioned means the first three weeks are spent absorbing damage rather than adapting. That is the entire argument for preparing, and it applies more here than the modest-looking minimums suggest.
PACER FORGE
The culminating event, and unlike the Marine Crucible or Navy Battle Stations it is weighted toward judgement: dispersed teams making decisions under stress, with limited information and a clock. Physical capacity keeps you functional; the assessment is about how you think and cooperate when tired.
Eight weeks of preparation
- Running, three times a week. The two-mile is the component most people are furthest from.
- Push-ups and sit-ups as daily volume — several submaximal sets most days beats one all-out set a week.
- Plank held short and often. 60–70% of your max, several times, rather than one hold to failure.
- Walk in boots. Standing and marching for hours is the unglamorous reality.
- Learn what you can beforehand — rank structure, the Airman’s Creed, three general orders. Free, and it buys quiet.
Arrive able to build, not to recover
Lensatic’s Air Force and Space Force BMT plan is built on the fitness assessment components and assumes no athletic base — a walk/run on-ramp for the first three weeks and a regression for every calisthenic. The Learn tab carries an Air Force basic training school of its own.

How long is Air Force BMT?
Around seven and a half weeks at Lackland, and it covers Space Force as well.
What are the fitness minimums?
For the under-25 group: two miles in 19:45 male and 25:23 female, 30 push-ups male and 15 female, 33 sit-ups male and 29 female, and a plank of 1:35 male and 1:30 female.
What is PACER FORGE?
The culminating field event, built around dispersed-team decision making under stress rather than around raw endurance.
Is BMT easier than the other services?
It is shorter, and its minimums are lower. It also trains six days a week and ends in an event that grades judgement rather than grit, which is its own kind of demanding.
