Preparing for Sapper School
Twenty-eight days, two phases, and a graduation march whose three-hour standard hides how steep the ground is.
The Sapper Physical Fitness Test
The SPFT is the entry gate and it is taken early, when you are already tired from getting there.
| Event | Minimum | Arrive at |
|---|---|---|
| Hand-release push-ups | 37 | 50–65 |
| Pull-ups | 5 | 10–15 |
| Two-mile run | 18:00 | 14:30 |
| Six-mile ruck, 35 lb plus FLC | Complete it | 1:18–1:30 |
What the course is
Sapper Leader Course runs about 28 days in two phases. General Skills covers demolitions, mountaineering, expedient breaching and Sapper-specific engineering. Patrols is the second half: graded patrols, planning under time pressure, and very little sleep.
It graduates with a 12-mile road march under three hours with 35 pounds, over ground that is genuinely steep. A flat-ground 12-miler and the Sapper 12-miler are not the same event, which is the single most common misjudgement people make preparing for it.
If your rucking is all on flat roads and a bike path, the terrain is going to be the surprise. Find the steepest sustained climb you can reach and ruck it repeatedly. Descending under load is its own skill and it wrecks quads that have never done it.
How to train for it
- Strength endurance over max strength. The course is repeated moderate effort for weeks, not a one-rep max. Higher-rep compound work, carries, and sandbags.
- Pull-ups as volume. Five is the minimum and it is not enough; mountaineering and breaching both ask for pulling.
- Ruck on hills, with the real load. 35 lb plus the fighting load carrier, not 35 lb total.
- Sleep-deprived practice, occasionally. Patrols phase is graded on planning while exhausted. Doing one long session on short sleep a month teaches you what your judgement does under that.
Twelve weeks on the SPFT and the march
Lensatic’s Sapper plan trains the SPFT events and the road march together, with GPS rucks, per-mile splits, elevation gain, and guided strength sessions that log every set. Pick Sapper and the standards board tracks the SPFT minimums as your numbers come in.

How long is Sapper School?
About 28 days, in two phases — General Skills and Patrols.
What is the SPFT minimum?
37 hand-release push-ups, 5 pull-ups and two miles in 18:00, plus a six-mile ruck with 35 lb and your fighting load carrier.
How hard is the 12-mile march?
Three hours is the standard, but the terrain is steep — treat it as considerably harder than a flat 12-miler at the same time.
Do I need to be an engineer?
No. Sapper is open beyond the engineer branch, though the technical content assumes you will work at it.
Is this official?
No. Preparation guidance published by Deadlift Digital LLC, not affiliated with or endorsed by the Army or the Department of Defense.
