Preparing for Navy Boot Camp

The fitness screen happens after you arrive, which means the only chance to prepare for it is now.

The run happens on arrival

Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes screens you with a 1.5-mile run shortly after you get there. Not before you ship — after. 16:10 for men, 18:07 for women.

That timing catches people out. There is no chance to train it once you know it is coming, and arriving unable to clear it starts your career in a hole.

Graduating on the PFA

Graduation runs off the Physical Fitness Assessment — push-ups, forearm plank and the 1.5-mile run, scored on the Navy’s performance levels. Aim to graduate at Satisfactory Medium or better rather than scraping it.

The comfortable column is roughly Good Low to Good High for a 17–19 male on the PRT scale. Score yours properly here.

Get comfortable in deep water first

There is a swim qualification, and it removes people who are otherwise fine. It is not a speed test — it is a "can you stay calm in deep water" test, and calm is trainable. A few months of going to a pool and treading water, floating, and getting used to having your head under solves it entirely.

If you cannot swim at all, start now. That is the single most valuable thing on this page.

Battle Stations

The culminating event: about twelve hours overnight aboard a destroyer simulator, running damage control and casualty scenarios. Less about raw fitness than about working a problem with a team while tired — but being unfit makes tired arrive much earlier.

Ten weeks of preparation

Ten weeks from a standing start

Lensatic’s Navy boot camp plan is built on what RTC actually gates on: the arrival run standard and the PFA. Weeks 1–3 assume no athletic base. Pool sessions log alongside runs in one feed, and the Learn tab carries a Navy-specific basic training school — eleven general orders, not three.
