Preparing for Coast Guard AST

The whole physical evaluation happens inside one hour. Then comes a school with a reputation for removing people who can swim perfectly well.

The Aircrew Physical Evaluation

Aviation Survival Technician — the Coast Guard helicopter rescue swimmer — screens with a physical evaluation completed inside one hour. The whole sequence, one hour, not one event at a time across a morning.

Cadence is the word that matters

Cadence push-ups and pull-ups are performed to a called count, not at your own speed. That is far harder than it sounds and it is the detail most candidates train around rather than for. Practise to a metronome or a counting partner, because twenty at someone else’s tempo is not twenty at yours.

A School is the real filter

The evaluation gets you a seat. AST A School has a reputation as one of the highest-attrition schools in any service, and what removes people is water confidence under sustained stress — multiple rescue scenarios, in the pool, being deliberately interfered with, for a long time.

Raw swim speed matters less than the ability to stay calm and keep working when the water is not cooperating. That is trainable, slowly, and it is the thing to spend the year on.

Training emphasis

The pool, tracked like any other session

Lensatic logs pool sessions with yardage alongside runs and strength work in one feed, and the eight-week swim programme paces off a time trial so technique, threshold and long aerobic work are trained separately rather than blurred together. Pick AST and the standards board tracks the evaluation numbers.

Questions

What is the AST physical evaluation?

A sequence including a 400-metre gear swim, two 300-metre shuttles, cadence push-ups and pull-ups and a side plank — completed inside one hour.

How hard is AST A School?

It has a reputation as one of the highest-attrition schools in any service, and water confidence under sustained stress is what removes people rather than swim speed.

What are cadence push-ups?

Push-ups performed to a called count rather than at your own pace. Train them to an external tempo.

Should I practise breath-holding?

Not alone, ever. Shallow water blackout gives no warning and is fatal without immediate rescue. Supervised sessions with rescue coverage only.

Is this official?

No. Preparation guidance published by Deadlift Digital LLC, not affiliated with or endorsed by the Coast Guard or the Department of Homeland Security.
