Preparing for POAS
The most forgiving physical standards in ARSOF selection, attached to an assessment that is almost entirely about how you think.
The standards
| Event | Minimum | Handbook goal |
|---|---|---|
| Five-mile run, rugged terrain | 45:00 | 40:00 |
| 12-mile foot march, 45 lb | 3:00 | 2:45 |
| Two-mile run | 16:00 | 13:00 |
| Hand-release push-ups | 30 | 60 |
| Pull-ups | 6 | 16 |
The physical bar is the most forgiving of the ARSOF selections, and that is the trap. People read a 45:00 five-mile and conclude the course is soft. The fitness is the entry fee; the assessment is about whether you can think, write and influence under pressure.
What PSYOP actually assesses
Intellect, communication, adaptability and judgement, assessed continuously. The work involves understanding audiences and producing material that changes what people do — which means the selection is weighted toward analysis, writing, briefing and the ability to hold a coherent argument while exhausted.
Practically, that means preparation includes: reading widely and outside your comfort zone, writing a clear page under time pressure, briefing something aloud to a person who will interrupt you, and being able to explain your reasoning rather than just your conclusion.
Same warning as CAAS, and for the same reason. A block that leaves you cognitively flat is the wrong block for a pipeline that assesses thinking. Build the fitness on adequate sleep, or you arrive fit and dull.
Training emphasis
- Get well clear of the minimums. Train toward the goal column, not the left one — a candidate at 45:00 has nothing in reserve.
- Five miles on rough ground, because the handbook specifies terrain.
- Carries and problem-solving while fatigued — the handbook names both.
- Write and brief regularly. It feels like nothing and it is the assessed skill.
Build the base, keep the brain
Lensatic’s POAS plan trains the run and ruck standards without burying you, and the recovery check-in makes sleep, soreness and resting heart rate visible day to day. Rucks and runs track by GPS with per-mile splits, and the standards board shows your numbers against the handbook as they come in.

What is the POAS ruck standard?
Twelve miles in three hours minimum with a 45-lb pack; the handbook goal is 2:45.
Is PSYOP selection easy because the fitness bar is lower?
No. The fitness bar is the entry fee. The assessment weights analysis, writing and judgement, and those are where people are cut.
How do I prepare for the non-physical parts?
Read widely, write a clear page under a clock regularly, and practise briefing aloud to someone who pushes back.
How does it compare to CAAS?
The CAAS foot march standard is faster. Both weight communication and judgement heavily.
